El Pasajero: Traditional Mariachi, Volume II, with Julian Gonzalez (2003)

El Pasajero is the second volume of rarely heard sones, abajeños and canciones rancheras of the traditional mariachi. Los Cenzontles, under the tutelage of Julian Gonzalez, have applied their artistry and scholarship to the little known roots of the mariachi. Distinct from the orchestral nature of the contemporary mariachi, El Pasajero brings to life the improvisatory spirit of the rural tradition. Its instrumentation is simple: two violins, vihuela, guitarron and vocal duet, male and female, and zapateado, percussive dancing.

“In an age when cultural purists sometimes criticize mariachis for their increasing drift toward commercialized, nontraditional styles (rock and other American music, for example), Los Cenzontles takes us back to bedrock mariachi—the kind that specializes in the traditional son jalisciense. Unique in its unvarnished folk style, Los Cenzontles with Julian González should satisfy the most demanding of purists, offering the listener a taste of the mariachi as it sounded in the era before commercialization.”
