Adios Ke Aloha — is a groundbreaking musical exploration that reconnects the long neglected ties between Mexico and Hawai’i. Led by Los Cenzontles, Taj Mahal, David Hidalgo, Gary Haleamau and Sonny Lim the project shines a light on the pivotal role that Mexican music played in Hawaiian culture since 1832 when Californian Mexicans first brought the art of cattle wrangling, and the guitar, to the Hawaiian islands.
Rich overtones of Hawaiian slack key guitars, lap steel, and ipu gourd ring proudly alongside Mexican harp, accordion, and regional guitars. Spanish, Hawaiian, and English languages mix freely in reimagined versions of old and new Hawaiian, Mexican, and Afro Caribbean songs and rhythms.
In a time when division and greed dominate the cultural landscape, Adios Ke Aloha is a healing reminder of the power of community, Native wisdom, and sharing.
Culture is a fabric within which we are all woven.
