El Toro Viejo: Traditional Mariarchi Volume IV (2006)

El Toro Viejo is the fourth, and final, volume of traditional mariachi music. Since 2000, Maestro Julian Gonzalez showed the members of Los Cenzontles the music and dance of this tradition which he learned in his youth on the ranch of Camichines, Jalisco. The group was immediately taken by this elder gentlemen and this quirky old style of playing and Los Cenzontles is the only group in the world dedicated to the traditional mariachi music and dance. This old, forgotten style fell victim to the overwhelming popularity of the contemporary mariachi which sought to gentrify the image of Jalisco and Mexico in general. Unique in its unvarnished folk style, Los Cenzontles with Julian González should satisfy the most demanding of purists, offering the listener a taste of the mariachi as it sounded in the era before commercialization. In all of these sones, a fresh, zestful and “down-home” enthusiasm prevails, one that we seldom hear in garden-variety commercial mariachis. Cultural purists, rejoice.
